Your chauffeur meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport. On the way to Kandy, stop at the Pinnawala elephant sanctuary and a spice garden (cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and Ayurvedic plants). In Kandy, take in the city from the viewpoint, visit a gem museum, and watch an evening Kandyan dance and drumming show.
Day 2 Kandy: temples, lake and botanical gardens
Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most important shrines, and walk or drive around Kandy Lake. In the afternoon, explore the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, known for their orchids, palms and giant trees.
Day 3 Kandy to Nuwara Eliya through tea country
A scenic drive into the hills past waterfalls and tea estates. Stop at the Hanuman temple on the Ramayana Trail and at Ramboda Falls, then tour a tea factory to see how Ceylon tea is picked and processed. End the day with a boat ride on Gregory Lake.
Day 4 Nuwara Eliya to Bentota on the coast
Visit Seetha Amman Temple, associated with Sita in the Ramayana, then drive down to the west coast. Take a boat safari through the Madu River mangroves with a stop at Cinnamon Island, and visit a sea turtle hatchery.
Day 5 Bentota to Colombo
Morning free for the beach or optional water sports (jet ski, banana boat, tube rides, paid locally). Drive up the coast to Colombo for Galle Face Green, Independence Square, a drive through Port City and a photo stop at the Lotus Tower, with time for shopping for spices, tea, batik and souvenirs.
