Choosing between North and South Goa shapes your whole trip. They're only a couple of hours apart by road, but they feel very different.
North Goa: busy, social and full of choice
North Goa is where most first-time visitors stay. The stretch from Candolim to Baga is packed with hotels, restaurants, shacks and clubs. Further north, Anjuna, Vagator, Morjim and Arambol have a more laid-back, bohemian feel.
Choose North Goa if you want:
- Nightlife, beach clubs and live music
- Lots of restaurants and cafés within walking distance
- Markets such as the Anjuna flea market and the Saturday night markets
- Easy access to Panjim and the forts at Aguada and Chapora
Popular areas: Calangute and Baga (busy, budget to mid-range), Candolim and Sinquerim (calmer, good resorts), Anjuna and Vagator (cafés, sunsets, nightlife), Morjim and Ashwem (quieter beaches, boutique stays).
South Goa: quiet, spacious and relaxed
South Goa has long, wide beaches and a slower pace. Large five-star resorts line the coast around Varca, Cavelossim and Mobor, while Palolem and Agonda in the far south are known for beach huts and calm bays.
Choose South Goa if you want:
- Clean, uncrowded beaches
- A family holiday or a honeymoon
- Resort stays with pools and private beach access
- Peace and quiet in the evenings
Popular areas: Colva and Benaulim (good value, local feel), Varca, Cavelossim and Mobor (big resorts), Palolem and Agonda (huts and boutique stays, very scenic).
Getting around
Goa has limited public transport for visitors, so most people rent a scooter or car, or use taxis. Whichever side you choose, budget for a day trip or two to the other half.
Which airport to use
North Goa is usually closer to Mopa (GOX) and South Goa to Dabolim (GOI). See our guide on which Goa airport to fly into.
Our take
- First trip, friends or nightlife: North Goa (Candolim, Calangute or Anjuna).
- Family, couple or pure relaxation: South Goa (Cavelossim, Benaulim or Palolem).
- Can't decide: stay in Panjim or Candolim, which are central enough to explore both.
